Biography of Sifu Lau Siu Chun. By Ed Wong.
Liu Shao Quan (Mandarin)

Lau Siu Chun was born in Qing Yuen Sek Kwok in Guangzhou on November 12th 1937. He had 8 siblings and began work at the age of fourteen manufacturing wood components for boats in a shipyard. Even at his early age he had a deep passion for the martial arts. With his monthly earnings he had was divided for his parents, food, clothing and other essentials. With the money he had left was saved for tuition of learning martial arts.

In his village of Qing Yuen, Shaolin Hung-gar was the most well know style, so suffice to say that this was initially the first martial art young Siu Chun had followed. His first instructor was Lau Gum Soy, which was amazed at Siu Chun's rate of learning and skill. In a few months time, Siu Chun had completed the entire form sets of Lau Gum Soy, which then referred him to Chan Teet Ow, and then to Ng Siu Chen thus completing the Hung-gar style.

At the age of sixteen, Siu Chun yearned for more martial arts skill. Choy Lay Fut is what Siu Chun had found next. Following Chan Yeu Che, and then Ow Han Chen thus completed the Choy Lay Fut style.

Years later he had learned and completed Wing Chun system with Sum Ling. Siu Chun satisfied with the skills and knowledge of three martial arts styles was quite elated as well as somewhat cocky. At this time Siu Chun was diligently practicing and became a force to be reckoned with.

One day while practicing his martial arts sets in a park, Siu Chun had seen another youngster performing a strange looking kung-fu style. His body was hunched and his movements were like bursts of lightning. Siu Chun decided then to challenge this strange practitioner to exchange hands. The youngster agreed and they prepared to spar. Much to Siu Chun's amazement, the youngster did not even take a horse stance. Siu Chun assumed his flat horse Shaolin stance and launched a missile fist. His opponent instantly intercepted Siu Chun's attack; he felt his arm sink and lock then was throw back. After a few more unsuccessful attacks Siu Chun was demoralized as much as he was perplexed.

Siu Chun then asked his opponent what type of martial art he had used and if he could teach him. His opponents had response was: White Brow Taoist Kung-fu and no he would not teach. As his opponent took his leave, Siu Chun followed him and found the location of his school. Siu Chun memorized the location: Tai Ping South Road 3811, Master Kwan Kwok Fai.

The very next day Siu Chun went back and managed to convince Master Kwan Kwok Fai to teach him White Brow Kung-fu, thus began Siu Chun's journey of learning this powerful style. After finishing the first number of forms, Kwan Kwok Fai then referred Siu Chun to Master Leung Sai Hoy for the next form and followed by Master Chan Kwai Yau, Master Tai Chek Wai, Master Yau Yen Wo, and finally Master Leung Bak. Siu Chun also learned the cousin form, the Dragon style from Master Siu Ting Fun.

In 1956 at the age of nineteen, Siu Chun had married a young woman named Chu Duk Hing and started a family. They had two sons and two daughters. All of Siu Chun's children had a similar devotion to the martial arts. Siu Chun's two sons were the most dedicated. In 1972, Siu Chun's oldest son Lau Chi Keung had become Guangzhou Hap-Ging-Do school instructor. At this time Siu Chun had joined many various martial arts associations and won many awards as well as gaining the respect of the community for advancing public well being, knowledge, and opportunities. Siu Chun and his family flourish in the following years constantly seeking self-improvement, and assisting in community functions.

In 1992 Siu Chun's daughter Lau Sen Ling along with her husband Wu Ging Sing (Eddy Wu) had sponsored Siu Chun to Canada. Siu Chun's son in law/pupil had planned for Siu Chun to instruct at the Freemasons Association in Calgary, Alberta.

In March 2003, Siu Chun took his students and separated to form an independent Calgary Hap-Ging-Do School. The Alberta government granted Incorporation to the school on September 4th 2003. The school is now White Brow Hap-Ging-Do Martial Arts and Lion Association. With all that said, it is time to move forward with our minds and hearts open. With dedication, hard work, and a sense of unity we can ensure a prosperous future for everyone.

"With a single day skills learned, equals one hundred days of practice."
